This is not the Goldeneye of Ian Fleming fame; but the winery and its fine pinot noirs would have delighted the connoisseur Fleming, had the author been alive today. Nestled in the tranquil Anderson Valley of Medocino, California—along the migratory route of abundant Goldeneye ducks—the winery is the pinot noir operation of Napa winery Duckhorn Vineyards. Since 1990, proprietors Dan and Margaret Duckhorn have produced distinct pinot noirs equal in stature to the company's acclaimed Napa merlots. In particular, the 2006 Migration pinot noir continues the world-class distinction. Winemaker Zach Rasmuson has the luxury of having a complex level of grape selection: with 22 different clonal varieties of pinot noir from 23 separate vineyard blocks, Rasmuson molds a wide canvas of flavors for his final blend.

Tasting profile

This bright red wine opens with a splendid cherry vanilla-like bouquet. On the palate, it's smooth, nicely balanced, and displays a sweet cherry flavor with touches of strawberry and pepper notes. The finish is quite dry, exuding a little warmth. It lingers nicely. The 2006 Migration pinot noir will please discerning fans of California pinot noirs as well as those who enjoy French burgundy. The Migration has a nice formation in the glass and its elegance comes to life when you give it time to express its complexities. Take yourtime on this wine and you won’t be disappointed.
